You know that using a nourishing moisturiser should be a super-important step in your morning and evening skincare routine. But who says you can only use a cream to get the job done? Read on to find out what facial oils can do for your skin.

Facial oils are gentle on your skin, working effectively with your skin’s flora to hydrate and restore its health. As with Silvan Skincare’s Rejuvenate Facial Oil, they're often packed with essential nutrients, fatty acids and antioxidants. While they're not the end-all-be-all solution to skin issues, they do their fair share by repairing and protecting your skin barrier, which helps your skin absorb other skincare products.

Because of their nourishing properties, facial oils work beautifully on dry, normal and even sensitive skin. And, contrary to the myth, facial oils can also benefit oily skin types by balancing out any natural oil from your skin.

If you have sensitive skin, we recommend checking out Silvan Skincare’s Soothe Facial Oil.

What’s the Difference Between Facial Oils and Moisturisers?

You may be wondering if you still need to use a moisturiser alongside a face oil or vice versa, and the answer is yes. They are both important steps in your skincare routine to ensure that your skin is fully hydrated and nourished.

Facial oils offer your skin a further boost since oils can penetrate deeper into your skin than some moisturisers. Facial oils are made purely from oils whereas moisturisers tend to be made from water, oils and other ingredients to help the two mix properly. This means that oils can nourish the deeper layers of your skin more extensively, replenishing your skin’s barrier layer and protecting it from dehydration and UV damage.

How to Use Facial Oils

Once we know what facial oil is and how it can help moisturise your skin, it’s time to learn how to use facial oil! Keep reading to find out the three techniques that will show you how to do just that.

Technique 1: Double Cleansing

We often recommend our customers who struggle with dry skin to integrate facial oil into their skincare regime as a first-cleanse. Gently massage a few drops of oil, such as the Palm of Feronia Ritual Cleansing Oil, onto your face to melt away makeup, daily dirt and grime. Then, perform a second cleanse with a soft cream cleanser, like the Odylique Creamy Coconut Cleanser.

This technique predominantly helps to dissolve impurities and remove makeup with ease, but it also helps reduce the need for a more aggressive cleanser that can often increase the dryness of your skin.

Technique 2: The Mix-Up

Whether you choose to add it to your cleanser, day cream or night cream, one of the most popular ways to use facial oil is by dispensing several drops into another product and mixing the two before gently massaging it into your skin. Mixing oil into a different formulation is renowned for locking-in moisture, especially if the oil features ingredients which are recognised for hydration — such as rosemary leaf and rosehip oil — as found in the True Skincare Rehydrating Facial Oil.

Technique 3: Leave-On Treatment

Apart from combining facial oil with your moisturiser, you can also apply your facial oil alone, or before a cream-based product, to boost its hydrating benefits. This method helps seal-in moisture and prevents future water loss and dehydration. We recommend using an organic facial oil with ingredients that activate over a period of time, such as the Meadow Skincare’s Overnight Replenishing Oil.
