What is body brushing and what are the benefits?
Brushing is second nature to us. We brush our hair, we brush our teeth - some of us even brush up our brows. But what about the skin on our bodies? It may sound like a foreign concept, but by the time you finish reading our guide to body brushing you - and your limbs - will thank us for it…
What is body brushing?
Dry brushing (or body brushing) is a highly popular, affordable skin treatment thanks to many benefits including exfoliation and lymphatic drainage. Dry body brushing is also completely natural and can be done from the comfort of your own home.
Body brushing is more or less what it sounds like. A combination of massage and exfoliation, by moving a dry, natural bristle brush over the body. Body brushing has been around for centuries, but it’s increasingly popular now we are paying more attention to our wellbeing. The treatment can be done at home using a body brush (we do a fabulous selection of them) or if you’re looking to treat yourself it can also be done professionally in a spa by buffing dry skin to slough off the layers of dead skin.
But is body brushing beneficial and does it work? You’d be surprised! Let’s have a look at the benefits of body brushing and why you should add this to your regular bodycare and self-care regime.
Body Brushing Beauty benefits
Body brushing can boost collagen production
Regular exfoliation with a body brush helps to prevent premature ageing and promotes cellular regeneration. Although skin renews itself every 28 days, the process slows down as you approach your 30’s - as a result, fine lines appear, skin loses elasticity and it looks duller and drier. ELYTRUM Founder Lenka Sopciakova recommends daily body brushing as it ‘’helps boost the renewal process by stimulating collagen production. All of which is crucial to reducing fine lines and wrinkles, restoring the skin’s elasticity and firmness, and promoting brighter, youthful-looking skin’’.
Body brushing helps unblock pores
Our skin needs clean pores to breathe. Pores get blocked by excess oil, makeup, dust and dead skin cells and blocked pores can lead to acne, blemishes and inflammation. Regular body brushing enables your skin to breathe and absorb moisture and beauty products more effectively. ELYTRUM recommends introducing regular body brushing into your beauty regime to enable your skin to breathe, keep the skin hydrated and to improve skin tone and texture.
Exfoliation without the use of scrubs, creams and chemicals
After the ban of microbeads in 2018 (due to the detrimental effect they have on our environment), exfoliating products now use a range of natural alternatives including coffee and jojoba grains. Whilst this is fantastic, those with sensitive skin and/or allergies may not be able to use these - enter dry brushing. Body brushing effectively helps shed dead skin cells and paves the way for glowing healthy skin. Body brushing also primes the skin to absorb organic body moisturisers, natural body butters and body oils, making them more effective. We recommend using a natural organic body moisturiser such as Bumi Naturals Organic Body Butter: Avocado, Hemp and Shea after using your body brush.
Body brushing can help prevent ingrown hairs
Most of us have had the unfortunate experience of ingrown hairs. They’re the bane of anybody’s hair removal journey. But did you know that regular exfoliation can reduce ingrown hairs? This is because ingrown hairs normally crop up when the hair follicles are obstructed by dead skin cells - hence where body brushing comes in. According to body-brushing experts Mio 'As we get a little older, our skin becomes less efficient at this whole detox/elimination process and less effective at naturally shedding the layers of dead skin cells that clog up the surface. A quick scrub before each shower improves cell turnover, which means fewer clogged pores so that hairs can grow out normally.'* Those who use IPL or laser removal may also benefit from body brushing as the process helps separate dead skin follicles from the root resulting in less shadows, discolouration and spikiness.
Dry brushing can improve the appearance of cellulite
Whilst you can’t fully get rid of the dreaded orange peel, you can certainly improve the appearance without the need of expensive creams, uncomfortable procedures or sweating it out in the gym for 3 hours. Body brushing helps as it aids even distribution of the fat deposits underneath the skin. With perseverance it has proven to give you a firmer, smoother appearance. Cellulite is also reduced because it brings lots of fresh, oxygenated blood to the surface leading to plumper, firmer skin - which in turn also makes your skin glow.

Body Brushing - Why it’s important for physical and mental wellbeing
We’ve talked about the beauty benefits of body brushing, but what about the benefits on our physical and mental wellbeing? It may sound like a strange concept, but body brushing isn’t just about glowing skin, reduced cellulite and making our trips to our waxer a breeze…
Body brushing and increased energy levels
We strongly recommend swapping your morning espresso for a body brushing session. Why? Because blood flow and circulation is stimulated from body brushing it gives the mind, body and skin a much needed boost.
Body brushing and lymphatic drainage
The lymphatic system is a major part of the immune system. It’s made up of vital organs, lymph nodes, vessels and ducts that transport lymph through the body. The lymphatic system sits just below the skin. By brushing the skin regularly, the lymph flow is stimulated which helps the dislodge toxins stuck in the body, thus flushing them out.
Body brushing and improved blood circulation
If you tend to get cold hands and/or feet due to poor blood circulation, body brushing can help get blood pumping throughout the body and those hard to reach areas therefore warming the body internally. We recommend starting at the feet and working upwards towards the direction of the heart to help aid the blood flow journey there.
Body brushing and mental wellbeing and clarity
Body brushing can help clear the mind. Whilst you can reap many physical benefits for the skin and body, your body will appreciate this simple daily self-care ritual. Our physical wellbeing also has an impact on how we feel internally. So not only will you physically glow from the benefits, but mental wellbeing and self love will also be boosted.
