How to Increase the Longevity of Your Natural Lipstick: A Step-by-Step Guide

Natural lipsticks are loved for their pure ingredients and nourishing qualities, but they sometimes don't last as long as synthetic options. With a few clever tricks, you can extend the wear time of your favourite natural lip colour. Here’s a simple guide to help your natural lipstick last longer throughout the day.

1. Start with Smooth Lips

The first step in ensuring your lipstick stays put is to make sure your lips are in great condition. Dry, cracked lips can cause your lipstick to cling unevenly and fade more quickly. Here are some tips to keep your lips smooth:

  • Exfoliate Regularly: Use a gentle, sugar-based lip scrub or a soft toothbrush to slough away any dead skin. This creates a smooth canvas for your lipstick. (why not book one of our lip scrub making workshops!)
  • Hydrate: Apply a hydrating lip balm or oil to lock in moisture. Allow the product to absorb for a few minutes before applying any other products. This prevents your lips from drying out and helps the lipstick adhere better. (You can find some excellent lip balms here)

2. Prime with Powder

One trick to make any lipstick, especially natural formulas, last longer is to use a bit of powder as a primer. Here’s how:

  • Apply a Thin Layer of Translucent Powder: Dab a small amount of translucent powder onto your lips using a fluffy brush or your fingertip. This step helps to absorb any excess moisture and provides a matte base for the lipstick to adhere to, making it more long-lasting. We love using Bomonde's Light Silk for a translucent finish or BareFaced Powder for different skin tones.
  • Use Foundation, Concealer or Eyeshadow: Alternatively, you can apply a thin layer of foundation, concealer or eyeshadow in a similar shade to your lipstick over your lips before dusting with powder. This can help neutralise your natural lip colour and enhance the true shade of your lipstick.

3. Define with a Lip Liner

Lip liner can be a subtle but effective tool for keeping your lipstick in place. It creates a barrier that prevents the colour from feathering or bleeding. Here’s what to do:

  • Choose a Matching Shade: Pick a lip liner that matches your natural lipstick shade or is just slightly darker. This helps define your lip shape and adds depth to the colour. We love Odylique's lip liner for this.
  • Outline and Fill: Outline your lips and then fill them in with the lip liner. This acts as a base layer that grips the lipstick, ensuring it stays put for longer.

4. Blot and Reapply

Layering your lipstick is key to making it last. Blotting with some tissue not only enhances the pigment but also ensures it adheres better to your lips.

  • Apply Your First Layer: Start by applying a thin layer of your natural lipstick directly from the tube or using a lip brush for more precision.
  • Blot with a Tissue: Gently press a tissue against your lips to remove any excess product. This helps set the first layer.
  • Reapply: Apply a second layer of lipstick. For even more staying power, you can repeat the blotting and reapplying process once more.

5. Set with a Final Touch of Powder

For a finishing touch, lightly dab a small amount of translucent powder over your lips one last time. You can place a thin tissue over your lips and dust the powder through it for a more natural finish. This step helps lock in the colour without altering the texture too much.
