How to Build the Perfect Winter Skincare Routine

As the seasons shift and temperatures drop, your skin often bears the brunt of winter weather. Cold winds, indoor heating, and less humidity in the air can lead to dry, dull, or irritated skin. By making a few small changes to your skincare routine, you can maintain healthy, glowing and dewy skin all winter.

We've collated our most frequently asked questions about winter skincare, expert tips and recommended products to help you build the best natural winter skincare routine, using kind-to-skin, sustainably sourced natural beauty products available in our natural skincare shop.

Why Skin Needs Extra Care in Winter

During winter, colder, harsher weather can mean that your skin’s natural barrier can become compromised, leading to dehydration, flakiness, and increased sensitivity. So your winter skincare routine should focus on nourishing, protecting, and locking in moisture. Below is a suggested winter skincare routine that focusses on keeping the skin balanced, protected and hydrated.

Step-by-Step Winter Skincare Routine Using Natural Products

1. Cleanse Gently, Not Harshly

Start your routine with a hydrating and non-stripping cleanser to lift away impurities while maintaining your skin’s moisture barrier. Cleansing oils and cleansing balms are the best option for your first cleanse and a creamy cleanser for your second cleanse. Anything that makes your skin feel tight or dry should be avoided.

Try:

Neve's Bees Cleansing Balm for a comforting citrus scent and beeswax base which mimics the skin's natural barrier.

Silvan Skincare Gentle Cream Cleanser enriched with cocoa butter and lavender leaves your face clean and calm.

2. Add a Nourishing Facial Mist

After you've cleansed, spritz a facial mist across your skin to boost hydration and prep your skin for better absorption of the rest of your skincare. We particularly recommend Casa Mencarelli's Toner in winter because it contains honey, a natural humectant that helps draw moisture to the skin throughout the day.

3.  Switch to a Richer Moisturiser

Trade your lightweight summer moisturiser for a richer cream that locks in hydration without clogging pores. Our most popular moisturisers for winter are Silvan Skincare's Nourish Face Cream and Terre Verdi's Nerolipom Moisturiser because they contain really hydrating ingredients that keeps your skin feeling soft throughout the day but they absorb really quickly.

4. Fall in Love with Facial Oils

Letting a facial oil slowly soak into your skin overnight is the best preparation you can do for the day ahead. Facial oils help lock in moisture and create a barrier against the drying effects of cold weather.

Try:
Terre Verdi's Franchoulipom Facial Oil – A deeply nourishing formula with argan, camellia and pomegranate oils to keep skin smooth and protected from environmental stressors.

5. Use a Hydrating Face Mask

Give your skin a weekly treat with a face mask to deeply hydrate, soothe and replenish. We rate Inlight Beauty's Chocolate Mask during the winter months because it's really replenishing and fortifying thanks for organic cacao, evening primrose and baobab.

6. Keep Up with Your SPF

Whilst it might not be as sunny in winter, you can still rack up the negative effects of sun and free radical damage which is a common reason for premature ageing, pigmentation and sagging skin. We love natural sunscreens here at Blomma Beauty and in particular Odylique's award winning vegan and organically certified sunscreen which is hypoallergenic, suitable for the whole family and reef safe too.

A note on your hand, lips and body

Your lips, hands and cheeks are especially vulnerable in cold weather because they're exposed to the elements. Supporting your skin with a good balm like Lyonsleaf Calendula Cream can help alleviate chapped, cracked skin because it gives your skin barrier some extra support. You can also lock in that moisture even further with some hand cream.

When it comes to the skin on our body, it's often neglected in the winter months. Keeping up with moisturising is always a good idea but if you can't bear waiting in the cold for it to absorb, simply switching your shower water from hot to lukewarm can help stave off skin flaking and it feeling parched and tight.

Try:

Neve's Bees offer so many useful products - hand salves, cuticle and lip balms. If you're vegan or want to avoid beeswax, Silvan Skincare's lip balms and hand creams are also fabulous.

Winter Skincare FAQs

Our most asked questions from our lovely customers about their winter skincare routines!

Q: Should I exfoliate in winter?
Yes, particularly if you can feel dry texture on your skin as sloughing this off will help your other products to absorb better. But go gently so as not to aggravate your skin. A simple konjac sponge is all you need.

Q: Can facial oils cause breakouts?
Not if you choose the right one! Lightweight, non-comedogenic oils like rosehip or jojoba nourish the skin without clogging pores. If your skin is particularly susceptible to clogged pores, we'd recommend avoiding heavier oils like caster, coconut, avocado and pomegranate.

Q: How do I know if my skin is dry or just dehydrated?
Dry skin is skin that produces less sebum than it needs, resulting in visibly dry, flaky and sometimes red/itchy skin. Dehydrated skin can affect all skin types, including oily, and is a result of a lack of moisture in the skin. Dehydrated skin may look a little dull, feel tight and lines will be more pronounced. Drink plenty of water and build the right skincare routine and you can't go too far wrong.

Q: How do I know if my winter skincare routine is working?
Your skin should feel calm, comfortable and hydrated, not tight, itchy or flaky. Adjust your products and textures as needed throughout the season.
