How do I use Its Pure Organics hair colours?

It’s Pure herbal hair dye is simple to use – just mix the powder with warm water to a yoghurt-like consistency and apply. Cover your hair with the cap provided in the box and wait for the colour to develop. The amount of time it needs to be left on varies with each shade from 30mins to 4 hours, so check the instructions in each pack carefully. The colour often develops further over the next 24 hours as it oxidises.

How much natural hair dye will I need?

One pack of herbal hair colour powder is usually enough for shoulder-length hair. Very thick hair will need more, or if your hair is very fine you’ll need less.

How do I choose the best pure hair dye shade?

You can find a helpful colour chart here to help you decide on the best shade. Start with your natural colour and use the chart to determine the approximate shade you'll go with each It's Pure hair colour. There are some shades that you won't be able to go depending on your natural colour, for example white or light blonde should avoid Henna Red as it's will appear too orangey and if you're looking to go black, you'll need to first use a darker brown shade before applying Indigo on to lighter hair. Similarly, darker hair colours won't be able to go blonde or lighter brown than their original shade.

If it's your first time using It's Pure Hair Dye, we recommend opting for one of the tester sachets so you can play around with different strand tests to get the perfect shade for you.

Can you lighten your hair with It's Pure hair dye?

As It's Pure organic herbal hair colours are peroxide free, you can't lighten your hair. You can dye your hair a similar shade to your natural colour, or go darker. As your hair starts to have more greys and whites in it, you may start to tone your hair to a lighter shade and ultimately become a lighter colour than your natural one.

Can I use It's Pure hair colours on my already chemically dyed hair?

We've had feedback from customers who already have chemically dyed hair that It's Pure is very effective on their hair. However, it's important to note that applying a pure natural organic hair dye on top of chemically dyed hair can affect the way the colour takes and the colour could be unpredictable and not what you expected. The following points should be considered:

  • It is best to wait 5 or 6 weeks after a chemical dye.
  • It is important to strand test the chemical dyed hair first to check that the colour is what you want before putting on your full head of hair. Why not choose one of our strand test sachets to begin with.
  • If your hair is bleached it is especially important to strand test because bleach changes your hair structure and makes it more porous and so the colour can appear more brassy or go a strange colour.

Can I use chemical dye after using It's Pure hair dye?

It is usually OK to use a deposit only, darkening chemical hair dye on top however you still have to careful that the colour is as you would expect. It is best to wait 5 or 6 weeks after the natural hair colour and strand test to check the colour is what you would expect.

It is not recommended to use chemical bleach on hair that has been dyed with a herbal hair colour containing indigo, i.e. black or brown shades or indigo itself, unless it has faded or grown out. This is because bleach will not remove indigo so you may possibly be left with a bluish colour. If you do want to try it please strand test first.

Can I use It's Pure Herbal Hair Dye if having chemotherapy or pregnant?

If you want to use the dyes during chemotherapy or pregnancy, please consult with your doctor first. It's Pure hair colours are quite different to chemical dyes as they are all natural and henna based and usually doctors are fine with them but it is always good to check in case your condition is different. All of the ingredients in It's Pure Organic Hair Dye can be found here in case you would like to show the ingredients to your practitioner.

Are It's Pure hair colours permanent?

The longevity of the hair colours depends upon which shade you use and how porous your hair is. For example the hair at the roots tends to fade more quickly than the hair at the ends which is more weathered and therefore more porous.

In terms of shades, the red shades are virtually permanent. The brown or black shades tend to last on average about 3 to 4 weeks on the roots, but they can become permanent on porous areas of your hair like the longer lengths of your hair.

Do It's Pure hair colours cover grey?

Most It's Pure customers are using it as a chemical free hair dye for grey hair. But it's important to flag that they will not cover grey as strongly as chemical dyes. Where you have grey hair it will usually be a lighter colour to the rest i.e. if you have some brown and some grey hair the grey hairs will usually come out lighter than the brown hair.

I've been using It's Pure hair dye for a while but it's not taking to my hair as well as it used to, why is this?

There may be a few reasons why your It's Pure dye isn't bonding to your hair the same as it used to.

  1. If your natural hair colour has changed or if you have more grey or white tones to your hair. Over time greys and whites can become more stubborn or resistant to colour, so it is possible your hair chemistry has changed since you first started using the organic hair dye. Try doing two applications of hair colour, either over your whole head or just your roots, or, apply the dye to your roots for a longer time than the rest of your hair.
  2. Your hair and scalp may be a little congested or have build up of product or old dyes. If you think this is the case, try treating your hair with It's Pure's pre-colour clarifying treatment which helps to remove silicones, build up, styling products and give your scalp a deep cleanse.
  3. If you've changed your shampoo or conditioner. Something as simple as changing the products you wash and condition your hair with can effect how well the colour takes to hair. Some shampoos and conditioners contain silicones in them, which bond to the hair, and prevent Henna from bonding as well. Try switching your shampoo and conditioner and seeing if this has an effect as well as using the hair colour pre-treatment hair mask above. We'd recommend using Odylique's range of SLS free, organic shampoos for best results.

Can I use It's Pure hair dyes if I am allergic to chemical dyes?

Many customers who are allergic to conventional hair dye happily use It's Pure. Our hair colours are natural and henna-based, without PPD, peroxide, ammonia, resorcinol or any artificial chemicals. However, we cannot guarantee that you will not be allergic. This is the same as with many natural products, such as nuts or strawberries that people may have allergic reactions to even though they are only natural.

To be sure of whether you will react to a hair colour it is best to perform a patch test 48 hours prior to putting the product on your scalp. To do a patch test, put a small amount of dye on the inside of your elbow. If any reaction occurs (itching, flakiness, redness) you may have a reaction to the hair colour. You can also use one of the It's Pure Test Sachets to do a patch test before buying the full sized box.

What is the best shampoo to use on coloured hair?

We would recommend using a gentle, organic shampoo, like the Gentle Herb Shampoo from Odylique
